ENGAGE – CHALLENGE - INSPIRE

The Vision for the AIDS 2006 Global Village is to:

Engage. Marginalized communities have historically faced barriers accessing International AIDS Conferences. Moving beyond networking, the Global Village will meaningfully involve these communities and those from the most-affected regions of the world by giving them opportunities to raise their priority issues and to advocate for change on key challenges they face.

Challenge. The Global Village will host activities at the forefront of the debate surrounding current HIV-related issues, while at the same time provoking discussion on new and emerging challenges.

Inspire. Acting as a catalyst for change, the Global Village aims to empower those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Looking to compel greater action to end the pandemic, the Global Village will build bridges between science, community and leadership components of the conference.

The AIDS 2006 Global Village is open to both conference delegates and non-delegates (including community organizations from around the world, local/national groups and the general public) and enables greater civil society involvement and exchange.

The Global Village covers over 7,000 square metres at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and has high visibility as the main entrance into the convention centre. No registration is required to visit the Global Village.

Through interactive and participatory space, the Global Village programme, organized by the Toronto Local Host in conjunction with the Community Programme Committee, highlights key HIV-related issues, concerns and priorities facing various HIV-affected communities. The programme promotes dialogue, encourages networking, builds solidarity, and promotes inclusion in the global community.

The Global Village is a community-focused space integrating community, science and leadership, that reflects the conference’s overall theme, Time to Deliver.

LOCATION:
Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), North Building, level 300.

OPENING/CLOSING TIMES*:
Sunday August 13:9:00 - 18:00
Monday August 14 - Thursday August 17:8:30 - 20:00
Friday August 18:8:30 – 12:30

*As the Global Village is the main entranceway into the conference, the space is accessible to delegates only at 6:30 to allow them to attend satellite sessions and Global Village morning sessions.

  • The Youth Pavilion is a youth-focused space for meetings, forums and evening sessions. It is a space to highlight and showcase youth achievements, facilitate networking opportunities via dialogue between youth and adults, provide a youth media hub and lounge and continue the momentum from the Youth Pre-conference. Daily sessions are held throughout the conference within the Youth Pavilion to prepare young delegates to participate in the conference, create advocacy action plans and record and report lessons learned back to their communities. They will also include daily summaries from the Youth Rapporteur Team.

    The Pavilion is the hub for youth communications and youth media at the conference where delegates can participate in online discussions, create their own online conference blog, report back about conference activities, create podcasts and check emails.
    The Pavilion will showcase youth work on HIV/AIDS issues and support youth delegates at the conference. Pavilion exhibits will demonstrate that young people—the population most affected by the epidemic—are actively working toward solutions. It will also give a voice to youth delegates and organizations, providing support and space for presentations and workshops.
    A comprehensive Youth Pavilion programme is available on the AIDS 2006 Youth Site at http://youth.aids2006.org.

    The Peter Busse Memorial “Meet the Plenary Speaker” Sessions bring the conference plenary speakers to the community and allow interaction and dialogue. These moderated daily lunchtime events will take place from 12:45 – 13:45 at the Main Stage. Come and find out more from these key speakers, ask your questions and make your comments!

    Daily live plenary broadcasts allow delegates and non-delegates to watch the conference plenary session directly from the Global Village session hall. Broadcasts occur from 8:45 – 10:15.

    The Main Stage is an open space where some debates, forums and presentations on key issues and challenges take place. The Stage will also highlight exciting cultural performances. Check the Global Village schedule listing below for all performances and events.

    The Virtual Village website will provide interactive opportunities to further engage the general public with the conference and, more specifically, the Global Village. Activities include:
  • Webcasting of Global Village events and sessions;

  • Live moderated e-forums focused on Conference themes;

  • E-discussion boards.

  • Visit the website at http://globalvillage.aids2006.org (to be launched in early August).

    The Video Lounge features HIV-related videos, documentaries and other short screenings that highlight the impact of HIV/AIDS, as well as the influential role of film and video in raising HIV awareness.

    The Community Dialogue Space: Gii Maa Moob Min – a name provided by the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network that translates in Ojibway to ‘a place to gather and discuss in the community’ – will be a space open to all communities attending the conference and will be created, hosted and anchored by the communities themselves. The core hosting communities of the space will be the 25 finalist communities of the Red Ribbon Award: Celebrating Community Leadership and Action on AIDS an inaugural award that aims to support creative and sustainable ways to provide care, treatment and support to people living with HIV/AIDS through recognition of outstanding community leadership.

    The space will be dedicated to creating opportunities to highlight stories of grassroots victories in HIV/AIDS responses, to identify challenges faced by community led action around the world, to encourage dialogue about developing an enabling environment for community participation in tackling HIV/AIDS. Targeted discussions will focus on key HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support themes of direct relevance to sustainable development among community representatives from different parts of the world, as well as dialogues between communities and international leaders.

    The Activities Area will be open from Wednesday August 16th – Friday August 18th and will be located in the AIDS 2006 Delegate Registration Area. This will be a participatory interactive activities area.

    The AIDS 2006 Community Engagement Booth is your best place to get information on local AIDS service organizations hosting open houses, details on unique community events and gatherings taking place during the week, ideas and suggestions on accessing the diverse multicultural communities in Toronto, links to exciting cultural events, as well as information on the AIDS 2006 Engagement Tour Programme.

    The Literary Lounge is a writer’s common space where delegates and non-delegates can come to network with fellow writers from across the world to share their work and stories with each other. This Lounge acts as the information hub for all literary-focused activities throughout the conference week. A message board will also allow writers to connect with each other.

    The Visual Arts Gallery will showcase HIV-related photography and artwork from the Cultural Activities Programme – Viral Culture.

    “HIV/AIDS Primer - Understanding the Science and the Patient Setting” is an animated and audio-enabled multimedia CD-ROM HIV/AIDS exhibit featuring interactive computer terminals with LCD monitors to allow visitors to explore the many facets of HIV/AIDS for self-directed and group learning experiences. One of the highlights is animations of the HIV Life Cycle with audio narration by Dr. Mark Wainberg, past President of the International AIDS Society and Co-Chair of AIDS 2006. Attendees can review the latest clinical guidelines, global epidemiological data, and a special section on psycho-social issues drawing upon success stories provided by the Desmond Tutu HIV/AIDS Research Centre and elsewhere. The exhibit is endorsed by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and developed in collaboration with the McMaster University Department of E-Learning. Visitors can register at the exhibit to receive a copy of the material in CD-ROM format.

    “Workplace Action: Centre for Advice and Information Exchange” Drop-In Centre is an information and meeting point for all those interested in workplace action. It provides opportunities for knowledge-sharing and guidance on policies and programmes. The Centre is run and resourced by a range of agencies, including the International Labour Organization, UNAIDS, WHO, World Bank, GTZ, International Organization of Employers and Canadian Employers Federation, International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and Canadian Congress of Labour, Global Business Coalition on AIDS, World Economic Forum, CDC Business and Labour Respond to AIDS, Family Health International, AED SmartWork, as well as individual enterprises.

    The Ideas Hub, a visual, auditory and sensory hub, organized by CUSO (a Canadian international development organization), aims to encourage participants to unearth, reveal and express alternative thinking, innovations, things left unsaid, and bold divergent concepts. The Ideas Hub features numerous mixed-media activity stations designed to eradicate paradigm-thinking. Each station features self-directed activities which will draw out paradigm-busting questions and answers from international participants.

    The Marketplace showcases HIV-specific income-generating projects from across the world and allows delegates and non-delegates alike to learn about these community-based organizations and to support them by purchasing the products created through their projects.
