Cultural Activities Programme – Viral Culture
Throughout history, artistic and cultural expression has been used to describe, make sense of and shape the human experience. Because traditional models of health education, prevention, and support have had many limitations in the global response to HIV/AIDS, artists and cultural workers are able to illustrate alternative and creative approaches to educating and promoting HIV/AIDS issues. Cultural forms of communication have been used across the globe to raise awareness about issues and as a call to action.
Theatre and performance art in particular have the ability to involve and engage audiences in dialogue that will enhance learning through experience. Visual arts can evoke strong emotional responses to issues and can renew energy and inspire action.
The AIDS 2006 Cultural Activities Programme (CAP), named Viral Culture, provides opportunities for educators, professional and amateur performers and community members from across the globe to share their methods and tools for alternative communication and education. The Programme includes visual arts, literature, film and video, performance art and other innovative mediums of expression. Activities take place both within the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and across the City, with many events being accessible to the general public.
